The Salam Shalom Story

In Kibbutz Gezer, Israel Dani Livney tends to the small communal olive grove. Not far away in a rural West Bank village, a Palestinian taxicab driver raises his children and tends his family's olive trees.

The two farmers meet and become friends. They discuss mixing and selling their olive oil.

In November 2005, Dani calls David Sokal, an old friend in Seattle, with an intriguing question: “would you be interested in importing a mix of Israeli and Palestinian olive oil?” David immediately replies, “Yes.”

After some difficulty getting through checkpoints, Dani picks up some of his Palestinian friend's olive oil, combines it with his and sends a sample to David.

It is excellent quality. Still, many problems remain to be solved and Dani decides to wait until next year.

That decision was made in 2006. In 2007, Dani found another Palestinian partner, Ata. Ata lives in the West Bank not far from Kibbutz Gezer tending the grove he and his father planted together. Dani and Ata have sent 200 liters each. Left is a photo of Ata with Dani's wife, Patches.

The Design Collaboration

The Salam Shalom label is designed in collaboration by renowned designers/calligraphers Oded Ezer, an Israeli, and Habib Khoury, an Arab-Israeli. Oded lives and works in Tel Aviv and Habib in the town of Fassouta.

Oded & Habib were asked to make the words for Salam Shalom in Hebrew and Arabic lettering. The letters for the two words are not that different. Oded and Habib found a way to emphasize the similarity of the letters allowing one to read either Salam or Shalom in a single design.

Habib worked to build a scene around the logotype that would evoke the middle-east, the good taste of olives and a peaceful quality.

You can also see many examples of Habib's creative Arabic calligraphy at his website: www.avantdesign.co.il. For more on Oded's life and work see www.odedezer.com

Olive Branch is proud to be associated with these two men and their work. Speaking of being proud, just as the new label for Salam Shalom was being finished, Habib became the father of a new son. Congratulations Habib!
